Harnessing the Power of Olympics

According to new research reported by The Guardian, lasting educational benefits can be created from mega-events - but it's all to easy not to make the most of them and the Olympic Games is one big learning opportunity you don't want to let pass by your school.

There really is no better way to mark the Olympics than to invite someone to come to your school to capture the energy the games will bring and create a truly memorable event.... with lasting effects!

in2schools.co.uk members have been preparing for the Olympics in their own unique ways and here are just a few examples of what they can offer your school:

Olympics show schoolsTheatre Tots new interactive show THE DAY I ENTERED THE OLYMPICS tells the tale of 5 year Ivy and her friend Boris and Bee and the day they accidentally found themselves competing in the Olympics! Exploring a little bit of the history and a lot of what actually goes on THE DAY I ENTERED THE OLYMPICS is a musical adventure to excite all young sports enthusiasts. The show is 30 minutes, followed by 30 minutes workshops to join in the action!

Jane Bower's creative workshops for KS1 and 2 use art to explore aspects of the Olympics. Expect to meet the Fauvists and Cubists to record movement and speed, Betty Edwards  for observational drawing of sports equipment and Boccioni to inspire childrens' own moving paintings. Jane's textile workshop will create a torch journey around your school!

school workshop olympicsStreet Style Surgery have planned an exciting Olympics T-Shirt making enterprise. Each young person will have a go at designing a really cool t-shirt that will represent some aspect of the Olympics, sports, countries, flags, landmarks or on a wider scale encompass what the Cultural Olympiad promotes, the arts, music, culture etc. The workshop will include customising T-shirts using fabric spray paints and stencils that they will make, come up with a brand name for their fashion company, produce a logo and swing label and look at garment costing.  All this can culminate in to a mini fashion show or photo-shoot if schools really want to harness the Olympic energy!
